Distillery Tours

At Balachladdich you are in the middle of whisky country, quite literally. Chances are that if you look out the windows of Balachladdich you will see a field in which green barley is springing into life, golden barely is ripening ready for harvest or the stubble lies witness to the harvest past. All of the barley grown at Foulis is used for distilling. And within an easy hours drive you can visit over a dozen Highland Distilleries where a magical mix of burn water and peat smoke are combined into the wonderful elixir that whisky is.

Our personal favourite is the Glenmorangie Distillery at Tain (25 mins) with a superb visitor centre and a tour which will explain in full detail the intricacies of whisky making.

Other distilleries include Glen Ord at Muir-of-Ord (30 mins), Dalmore at Alness (15mins) and of course Scotland’s only malt whisky and distillery trail, featuring the single speyside malt whisky trail including the distilleries of Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, and Glen Moray ( 1hr and 15 mins away).

Sometimes when the wind blows in from the east you will smell the “draft” as the remnants of fermented barley are removed from one or other of the distilleries lying at the east end of the firth.
