The Swampy Woods Walk
About 45mins.
Walk up the drive to the top and then turn right onto the “Top Road”. Walk along the road until you come to a cottage on the right hand side. As you go up the hill toward the cottage, you will see Fyrish Hill in the distance with a monument on its summit. A local tradition has it that in order to give work in a time of famine, Sir Hector Munro of Novar, a soldier who had made his fortune in India, caused a copy of the Gates of Negapatam (at the sack of which he had been present) to be built there.
Immediately after the cottage, take the next road to your left. The croft on your right used to house the local Black Smiths Shop or “Smiddy”.
Take the next road on your left, the house on the corner used to be occupied by the family man who ran the sawmill located there but now long gone.
When you get to the top of the hill turn left, this will take you past the entrance gates of Foulis castle. The Eagles on the gate posts are the Family crest. As you go down the hill you will notice the wall of the old Walled Garden which has now been planted as an arboretum and below that a pond, if you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of a moor hen or a pair of ducks.
Further on you get superb views of the Castle over the field or lawns in front of it.
When you reach the Top Road again turn left and the Balachladdich driveway is a short distance ahead on your right.
If you see a deer on you walk it is most likely a roe deer.
You may also hear the high pitched whistle of a buzzard.
Rabbits are so common as to be a pest. They can consume as much as ten percent of the arable farming crop.
