The Katewell Walk

Walk up the drive to the top and then turn right onto the “Top Road”. Walk along the road until you come to a cottage on the right hand side. As you go up the hill toward the cottage, you will see Fyrish Hill with a monument on its summit. A local tradition has it that in order to give work in a time of famine Sir Hector Munro of Novar a soldier who had made his fortune in India, caused a copy of the Gates of Negapatam (at the sack of which he had been present ) to be built there.

Immediately after the cottage, take the next road to your left. The croft on your right used to house the local Black Smiths Shop or “Smiddy”.

Keep walking along the road past the cross roads and the Black Park wood on your left until you come to a sharp turn to the right in the road.

Take this right turn don’t turn left up the hill. This road will take you down a charming country road past Katewell Croft built near the spot where the family of President James Monroe of the United States of America originated and past Katewell Farm. The road eventually comes out on the “top road” just outside the Village of Evanton. Turn left and you’ll be at the Evanton shop in about ten minutes where you can buy a snack, turn right and follow the road and you’ll be back at the top of the drive in about twenty minutes.
