50 GREAT COURSES TO CHOOSE FROM

The Highlands give you the chance to play some outstanding golf courses, many of which are well known while many others are “hidden gems”.

The Highlands have an enviable array of links and parkland courses and what’s more they probably offer the most scenic and cost-effective golf in the world.

Without doubt the most famous course in the Highlands and Islands is Royal Dornoch, believed by many experts to be the finest northerly course in the world. Located just twenty seven miles from Balachladdich, Old tom Morris designed this golfing masterpiece which is a golfing haven. And if you happen to visit in April or May you’ll enjoy a sight to behold the banks of whins become ablaze with yellow.

Close by Dornoch are some other courses that should really be on everyone’s list to play. Tain on the other side of the Dornoch Firth is another top class links test and the same most certainly can be said of the Golspie and Brora courses which sit to the north of Dornoch on the edge of the North Sea.

Inverness boasts a number of courses. Inverness Golf Club is a fine parkland course which overlooks the Beauly firth while the Torvean and Loch Ness courses are also situated with striking distance of the city centre.

Take the A96 eastwards out of Inverness and you will soon arrive at Nairn one of the most famous golfing towns in Britain. There are two courses in Nairn and quite frankly you must try and play them both. Colin Montgomerie won the 1987 Scottish Amateur at Nairn Golf Club which was also the venue for the 1999 Walker Cup. Nairn is a fabulous test of golf as is the Nairn Dunbar which is at the other end of the town and is every bit as good.

Closer to Balachladdich is the parkland course of Strathpeffer Spa with the West Highland Hills as a stunning backdrop. Alness has a reputation as being one of the friendliest courses in Britain. A hidden gem is the Rosemarkie and Fortrose Club on the Black Isle. And then there are the Highland parkland courses of Boat of Garten and Grantown-on –Spey.

With so many courses to choose from and all that superb scenery what more could you possibly want.
