  • Shopping in Inverness (an easy twenty minute drive).
  • Golf, all the local golf courses welcome visitors and the secretaries of the clubs would be pleased to book you a Tee off time. The Highlands of Scotland is home to some of the finest golf courses in the world. There are courses to suit both experienced golfers and beginners, many of which have been designed by Tom Morris. There are more than 20 golf courses within an hour’s drive of Balachladdich including the challenging Royal Dornoch Golf Club, Nairn Dunbar, Strathpeffer and The Carnegie at Skibo.
  • Visit any one of the areas spectacular beaches Portmahomack, Rosemarkie, Dornoch, Gruinard, Nairn and Lossiemouth.
  • A visit to Campbell’s Tweed House in Beauly (Thursday is early closing day so don’t go in the afternoon) where an amazing collection of Scottish made woolen tartan and tweed goods can be found along with the Made in Scotland Gallery.
  • Visit any one of the National Trust for Scotland’s properties, including Inverewe Gardens, (1 hour drive), Brodie Castle, (45 minute drive) and Culloden Battlefield (half an hour).
  • Take a train trip on the little train that passes in front of the house. You can catch it in Dingwall and go to Wick or Thurso for the day; alternatively take the train to Kyle of Lochalsh right through the centre of the Highlands.
  • Visit one of the many distilleries, Glenmorangie in Tain and Glen Ord in Muir of Ord on the Way to Beauly give especially good tours.
  • Pack a picnic and hike to the Top of Fyrish Hill (see the walks section of the binder.
  • Drive down the A9 to House of Bruar which provides a unique shopping and dining experience. Closer is Brodie Country Fayre which you could stop into on the way to Brodie Castle.
  • Visit Fort George at Ardersier the most complete example of an eighteenth century fort in Britain.
  • Take a trip down the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness with Jacobite Cruises [0]1463 233999 or if you want to go a little faster try the Loch Ness Express 0800 328 6426.
  • Eden Court Theatre (01463) 234234 in Inverness have a constant program of concerts plays and films or you can take in a movie at Vue Cinema (0871) 224 0240
  • You could discover the Picts at the Groam House Museum in Rosemarkie or at the Tarbat Discovery Centre, housed in a beautifully restored 18th century church at Portmahomack.
  • Timespan in Helmsdale about an hours drive North 01431 821327, is well worth a visit giving an insight into the old Highland way of life and explaining the clearance of the crofting folk off the land. You might combine this with a visit to Dunrobin Castle.
  • Take a day charter out of Ullapool about a one hour drive with Creag Ard Charters 01854 63380 and fish or just sight see.
